What is
Adhikmas or Malmas or Purushottammas?
More recently, I came to
know that Adhikmas, Malamas or Purushottammas have started today. But what is
this and why? I did not know about these questions. Also, its name is not like
the ordinary months, like Chaitra, Baisakh or any other month which we know
according to Indian tradition. So I had a strong desire to know about it. When
I read and learned about it, I was intrigued to be an Indian and was surprised
by the mathematical knowledge hidden in it. Our ancestors knew how accurate the
celestial events were. So here I am trying to explain, What is the Adhikmas.
Come and learn about it!
As we know that the Indian
almanack is set on the motion of the three planets Earth, Moon and Sun. A
complete cycle on its axis of the earth is generally considered a full day. And
a full cycle for the Moon around the Earth is called a month or month. Same as
a cycle of the Earth around the Sun is considered a year. The Indian almanack
is set on this basic principle.
Now you will say that
there is nothing new in this. Everyone knows this. All right, even everyone
knows. But very few people know ahead of it.
Scientific significance:
Now we already know that
in a mathematical language, any circle has angles ranging from 0 to 360
degrees. This can be divided into 12 parts of 30 degrees. Indian almanack
(Panchang) has divided these 12 parts into 12 months, 12 zodiac signs and 12
constellations. Right now we do not talk about zodiac signs or constellations.
But through number 12, we will try to understand the mathematical theory of
Adhikmas.
As we know that the moon,
in about 29.5 days (from one full moon to another full moon via no-moon or less
moon in between), completes a full circle of the Earth. And we know like a full
lunar month. This means that one year of the moon is 29.5 * 12 = 354 days.
Whereas based on the Sun, one year of the Earth is about 365 days and 6 hours.
Now if we see the difference between them, then it is about 11.25 days in a
year. And every 2.6 years this difference becomes 29.5 days which is equal to
one full lunar month. Likewise, this excess month (Adhikmas) is added to the
almanack to create harmony between the sun almanack and the lunar almanack. Due
to which both almanacks are aligned. Now you must be surprised to know that
even thousands of years before when the world did not know the number system
properly, we have been using such accurate mathematical almanack in our daily
life. Isn’t it great!
Spiritual significance:
Now we also understand its
spiritual significance. In the spiritual world, this month is also known as
Malamas. Now the problem here is that there are a lot of brain-numbing people
in our society. One who does not understand the sense & gist of a word but
catches its literal meaning and gets involved in propaganda. Here, the name of
this month as Malamas doesn’t want you to poop for a complete month, literally.
But means that at least every 2.5 years, a human being should work for 1 month
to give up their internal stools (filthiness) such as greed, anger, jealousy,
malice etc. And in this sense, one should meditate on the Purushottam form of
Lord Narayana(reason for everything which exists or not) and try to imbibe his
qualities. For this reason, it is also known as Purushottam month as well.
I hope that after the
above information you will agree on your Indian knowledge both scientifically
and spiritually. If you like this article, then you must share it with all your
friends and families.
Thank you.
